Best Scooter Routes in Phuket 2026 – Coastal Rides, Tips & Map

Navigational map showing the route at Koh Phuket with key waypoints and directions.
Few ways of exploring Phuket come close to the freedom of a scooter ride. While tour buses follow fixed itineraries and taxis keep the meter running, a scooter puts you in complete control: stop whenever something catches your eye, take the scenic detour, find that beach that isn't on any map.
Phuket is well suited to two-wheel exploration. Roads are well maintained, distances are manageable, and many of the island’s most beautiful spots are only accessible by smaller coastal or jungle roads that buses simply can’t reach. On a scooter, you can connect multiple beaches, viewpoints and local markets in a single day – on your own schedule.
Below you’ll find three tried-and-tested scooter routes in Phuket, ranging from a relaxed coastal ride for beginners to a full island loop for the more adventurous. All routes have been personally ridden and tested by our team.

Why Phuket Is Perfect for Scooter Tours

Phuket is large enough to offer genuinely varied scenery and routes – and compact enough that you can cover a lot of ground in a single day. The island stretches around 48 km from north to south and 21 km east to west, meaning most destinations are within 45 minutes of each other.

What makes Phuket particularly rewarding for scooter riders is the quality of the coastal roads in the south and west. Many of them follow the hillside directly above the sea, combining curves, ocean views and tropical vegetation into something that makes the ride itself as memorable as the destination.

Practical advantages of a scooter over taxis or rental cars:

  • No fixed schedule – stop whenever and wherever you want
  • Easy parking even at busy beaches and viewpoints
  • The most affordable way to explore the island (from ฿180/day)
  • Access to beaches and viewpoints that are unreachable by bus
  • Spontaneous stops at local markets, temples and cafés

Before you ride, make sure you’re up to date on local traffic rules. Fines for riding without a helmet and driving without a licence have increased significantly since 2025.

Scooter Route 1 – Coastal Ride to Promthep Cape

Distance: approx. 25 km | Riding time (direct): approx. 45 min | With stops: 3–5 hours | Difficulty: Easy – ideal for beginners

The southwest coast route is Phuket’s most popular scooter ride and the best introduction to riding on the island. Starting in Patong, you follow the coastal road south through Karon and Kata, stop at the Kata Viewpoint – one of the best photo spots on the island – and end at Promthep Cape at the very southern tip of Phuket.

Promthep Cape is especially spectacular at sunset. From here you can see the entire southwest coastline and, on clear days, the outlying islands of the Andaman Sea. Time your arrival for around 6:00–6:30 PM for the best light, and expect company – this is one of Phuket’s most popular viewpoints.

Route stops

  1. Patong Beach – starting point
  2. Karon Beach – long, quieter beach; short stop recommended
  3. Kata Beach & Kata Viewpoint – panoramic photo spot overlooking two bays
  4. Nai Harn Beach – one of Phuket’s most beautiful and relaxed beaches
  5. Promthep Cape – viewpoint, lighthouse, sunset

Scooter Route 2 – Ride to Hidden Banana Beach

Distance: approx. 30 km | Riding time (direct): approx. 50 min | With stops: 4–6 hours | Difficulty: Easy to moderate (some curves and elevation)

Banana Beach is one of Phuket’s most beautiful and least crowded beaches. No mass tourism, no jet ski operators – just clear water, good snorkeling and a relaxed atmosphere under the palms. The beach sits tucked between Kamala and Bang Tao, which is precisely what makes the ride to get there so rewarding.

The route heads north from Patong along the coast, through the quiet village of Kamala and the upmarket Surin Beach area, before reaching Bang Tao. Just beyond that lies Banana Beach, accessible via a narrow track – the full details are in our route guide.

If you have a full day and want to see the entire island in one sweeping ride, the complete island loop is the way to do it. This route links Phuket’s southern tip with the historic Old Town, quiet northern beaches and the return along the west coast – a genuine adventure that reveals many different sides of the island.

Start early (7:00–8:00 AM) to avoid midday traffic in the city. Build in at least two lunch and water breaks – staying hydrated in tropical heat on a longer ride is not optional.

Safety Tips for Scooter Riding in Phuket

Phuket is not the place for careless riding. Traffic follows its own logic, roads can become extremely slippery after rain, and side roads are often narrower and more twisting than expected. With the right approach, however, a scooter tour in Phuket is safe and genuinely enjoyable.

Non-negotiable rules:

  • Always wear a helmet – even for short distances. Fine since 2025: ฿500–1,000
  • Carry a valid motorcycle licence (Class A or international driving permit with motorcycle endorsement)
  • Take out travel insurance with motorcycle cover – riding without a valid licence voids most policies

Practical tips for safe riding:

  • Ride defensively – never insist on right of way
  • Start early in the morning – less traffic, cooler temperatures, better light
  • Dramatically reduce speed in rain – roads become very slippery very quickly
  • Carry enough water – dehydration in tropical heat is a real risk on longer routes
  • Avoid riding on unfamiliar roads after dark

Explore Phuket Freely by Scooter

Exploring Phuket independently by scooter is one of the best decisions you can make for your holiday. Hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints and local restaurants are often only reachable along smaller roads that are perfect for a relaxed, unhurried ride.

All three routes can be ridden any day of the year. During the monsoon season (May–October), build in flexibility for rain breaks and expect quieter roads and emptier beaches as a reward.
