Raya/Racha Island

Patok Bay and Ter Bay: These stunning beaches feature soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Patok Beach is ideal for relaxation and water activities, surrounded by lush green hills. Kon Kae Bay, a quieter option, offers an equally beautiful sandy shoreline but with fewer visitors. It’s perfect for peaceful swimming, snorkeling, and leisurely beach walks. The Underwater World of Racha Island is a must-see for snorkelers and divers, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, including colorful fish, turtles, and occasionally small reef sharks.

Tropical Paradise South of Phuket

Racha Island – also known as Raya Island – lies about 12 kilometers south of Phuket and is famous for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and excellent diving conditions. The island actually consists of two parts: Racha Yai, the larger and more developed island with small resorts and restaurants, and Racha Noi, an uninhabited diving haven with deep waters and pristine coral reefs.

Nature and Beaches

Racha Yai’s coastline is lined with turquoise bays, most notably Patok Bay, Ter Bay, and Kon Kae Bay, each offering a different atmosphere. Patok Bay is known for its lively beach and calm swimming waters, while Ter Bay provides an intimate setting with soft sands and a quieter vibe. Kon Kae Bay is ideal for snorkeling and underwater photography, featuring shallow coral gardens and abundant marine life.

Underwater World

Racha Island is one of the top diving and snorkeling spots near Phuket. Visibility can reach up to 30 meters, and the reefs are home to colorful coral species, tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally reef sharks. Racha Noi, located a short boat ride away, offers deeper dive sites suited for experienced divers, with dramatic underwater rock formations and frequent manta ray sightings.

Island Atmosphere

Unlike busier destinations like Phi Phi or Coral Island, Racha Island maintains a more tranquil, natural charm. Visitors can enjoy quiet walks, fresh seafood at beachside restaurants, and views over emerald bays surrounded by lush greenery. Small resorts and boutique hotels on Racha Yai make it possible to stay overnight and experience the island after day-trippers have left.

I was amazed by how crystal clear the water around Racha Island was – you can literally see the seabed! Snorkeling in Kon Kae Bay was a dream. We spotted countless colorful fish and even a sea turtle. After lunch, there was plenty of time to just relax on the beach. For me, it was the best trip of my entire Phuket holiday.

The speedboat ride from Chalong Pier was quick and smooth. Racha Yai really impressed me with its peaceful atmosphere – nothing like the crowds at Phi Phi. I snorkeled along the shallow reef with visibility easily over 20 meters. The only downside was that the beach restaurant was a bit crowded at lunchtime, but otherwise everything was perfectly organized.

An absolute highlight! It was my first time diving, and the crew was incredibly patient and professional. The underwater world was stunning – coral gardens, clownfish, even a few barracudas. Afterward, I enjoyed a quiet walk along Patok Beach with a fresh coconut in hand. This tour is a must-do, whether you’re into snorkeling or just want to relax in paradise.
