Raft on a jungle river in Phang Nga, class-II waves, helmets, a tropical canyon

Rafting from Phuket: the right trip for water and family adventure

Rafting suits you if you want an active, wet day on a moderate river. Trips usually begin in Phang Nga, around 1–1.5 hours from Phuket, and use Class II–III rapids. From ฿2,499 including transfer, often with lunch.

A search for rafting in Phuket usually leads to a van ride to Phang Nga. There, the trip follows beginner- to intermediate-level Class II–III rapids. Helmet, life jacket, paddle and guide are provided. An optional canyoning element usually means slides and small jumps, rather than an alpine-style gorge trip.

In the rainy season the river carries more water, which can make the ride livelier. In thunderstorms or uncertain conditions, operators wait, adjust the route or reschedule the trip. Bring a change of clothes in a dry bag – you will get fully wet.

Rafting by water level

May–October

More water often makes for a livelier ride. Trips can be cancelled at short notice in heavy rain or when there is a flash-flood risk.

November–April

Water levels are usually lower and the route is gentler. In shallow sections, the raft can occasionally glide over stones.

Come prepared for the raft

Keep valuables in a dry bag or leave them at the hotel. Glasses need a strap, and shoes are better than flip-flops in the raft. If you see an elephant add-on, choose a genuine sanctuary with no riding or forced interaction.

Is rafting safe?

Typical routes are Class II–III and use helmets, life jackets and a guide. Swimming skills are helpful. Follow instructions and do not take part after drinking alcohol.

The region mainly offers Class II–III routes. They are intended for beginners and families with appropriate guidance, rather than extreme white water.

No. On family routes, it is enough to paddle when the guide gives the instruction.

Completely wet. Bring swimwear, dry clothes and shoes that can get wet.

Trips start at ฿2,190 including transfer. Combination programmes with other activities or sanctuaries cost more.
