Mu Ko Similan is a national park, not a standard beach day. The journey is longer than Phi Phi, but in season you can expect granite boulders, bright bays and often excellent underwater visibility. If snorkeling matters more to you than water sports or a short transfer, Similan is the right choice.
The park is normally fully closed from mid-May to mid-October; private speedboats are not permitted either. For a summer stay, Coral or Racha are more realistic alternatives. Visitor numbers are limited from January to March, so it is best to reserve with time to spare.
Visibility is often best from November to April, with water around 28°C. January to March is the busiest period.
The national park is fully closed. Opening dates are set by the park authority and can change.
Please do not take rocks or shells and never touch coral. Use reef-safe sunscreen. The crossing is long, so take your usual seasickness remedy in good time before departure if you need one.
Usually from mid-October to mid-May. The national park authority sets the precise dates. The park is closed from mid-May to mid-October.
Similan is farther away, costs more and focuses on reefs and snorkeling. Coral is closer, more family-friendly and better for an easy beach day.
Allow about eight hours door to door. The longer journey is part of the trip; Coral or Khai fits a tighter schedule better.
Depending on conditions, you may see coral reefs, plenty of reef fish and, with luck, turtles or larger fish. Visibility of 15–30 metres is possible in season but never guaranteed.
Yes, but only on designated dive trips and with the appropriate certification. The day trips described here are snorkeling trips.
